The American Flag

In June 1776, General George Washington and two State delegates to the Continental Congress visited noted Philadelphia seamstress, Betsy Ross, and asked her to sew a flag based on a design that the men brought with them.  She agreed but suggested that the stars should have 5 points instead of the 6 shown in the design.

A year later, on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress officially adopted the design with the 5-pointed star.  The delegates resolved that a flag representing the newly minted independent and sovereign States, then united in a war with Great Britain, would consist of thirteen stripes, alternating in red and white and that the canton (upper left corner) would contain thirteen stars of white in a field of blue, symbolizing a new constellation in the heavens.  No stipulation was made about the arrangement of the stars.  Thus, the stars were originally arranged in a circle.  Later, this flag became known the Betsy Ross flag; however, it is the original American Flag and the direct ancestor of the one we fly today.

Between 1777 and 1960, the Federal Congress passed several acts that changed the flag’s official design and stipulated its symbolism.  Accordingly, the thirteen horizontal stripes (seven red and six white) symbolize the first thirteen colonies that became the original sovereign States of America.  The fifty stars in the canton symbolize the current number of States. As for the official meaning of the colors, white symbolizes purity and innocence; red symbolizes hardiness and valor; and blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Unofficially, the color combination symbolizes Liberty and courage.  Blue symbolizes freedom, and white represents moral purity, which together are the essence of Liberty.  Red represents the courage to defend both Liberty and the American republic of States.  Some Americans say that the red color represents the blood of Christ, the author of Liberty– an opinion that makes good sense to us.  Beauty and symbolism, after all, is in the eye of the beholder.  Perhaps one day, such an official designation will be stipulated.

Take a visible stand for Liberty– freedom linked to Christian morals and principles– and the American republic.  We make it easy by offering flags, license plates, signs, stickers, and apparel including shirts, tactical caps and patches, and collar, hat, and lapel pins.
